5 Things to Know About Working with a Professional Home Organizer

Some people don’t like to talk shop at parties. Now that I’ve transitioned from a marketing executive to a professional home organizer, I love it! People are always fascinated to hear what exactly I do, how long I’ve been doing it, and what the experience is like. They often say, “Oh, I really need you at my house!” If I were to meet you at a party and I told you what I do, what would your response be? Maybe you know you need help but have questions because you have never worked with an organizer and don’t know what the process is like.  If you are ready to take the next step in getting organized or would like a bit more information, I’m sharing what it’s like to work with a professional home organizer on today's blog.

1.      If someone is coming over for a consultation or you will meet an organizer for your first working session, please do not clean up or tidy your home. It is more helpful for us to see your home in its natural state to pinpoint your struggles. This gives us valuable information on how you live and what systems are established in your home. From there I can create and customize the best experience and results for you.

2.      Please consider pets and children when an organizer is coming over. If your child/children are young and very dependent on you, it may be best to employ a daycare or a neighbor to watch them during sessions. This will help you make the most of our time together. If your pets are always following you around the house and needing attention – or if they are anxious and nervous around strangers, we recommend that you find a calm place for them to stay during sessions.

3.      No judgment—a true professional will be open, understanding, and kind while getting to know you and working in your home. Many people tell me about the shame they harbor from shopping too much, clothes in the closet with tags still on them, and guest rooms filled to the brim. But remember, we are in this business because we want to help you. We want to help take away the harmful shame you are carrying and help you to love your home again. Our non-judgmental approach ensures that you feel safe and understood throughout the process.

4.       You will get very mentally fatigued during an organizing session. Organizing a space requires many decisions about keeping, discarding, donating, or selling items! Before a session, try to be rested, fed, and hydrated. Ask your organizer for a break. I continually ask clients how they are doing throughout a session and see what they may need. Many times, clients find motivation and continue to declutter on their own between session dates, which they are always so proud of!

5.      Be open to suggestions—Sometimes, clients want to start working in the basement or garage, yet their main living areas are in chaos, causing them constant daily stress. Remember that organizers are experts, trained, and experienced in setting up a household for success. Trust the process, knowing that being open to new things can significantly impact your space. Our proven methods and expertise will guide you towards a more organized and stress-free home, giving you the confidence and reassurance you need.

I hope this information is helpful and answers the questions you may have. Please reach out if you’d like to learn more about organizing or working with me; organizing is my favorite topic to talk about!
